Light a Spark: Empowering Women and Girls in STEM

In coordination with the UN’s 2020 International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, the U.S. Chamber Foundation with its partners will launch a campaign profiling five women who have found success applying their STEM education in what might be considered unconventional STEM careers. Through captivating video, photography, and storytelling, we will join the voices empowering and inspiring girls to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by offering them a new lens through which to see their STEM future.

By 2020, one of the city’s higher education institutions, in partnership with some of the city’s major STEM businesses, will look to make a bridge of their own to address a skills gap that is prominent across the country. In the fall of 2020, the College of Charleston (CofC) will officially introduce its Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering degree program after being approved by the state’s Commission on Higher Education this summer.

Each year, as the Chamber Foundation hosts the Talent Forward national workforce conference, we focus on talent—educating and training, talent tech and data, recruiting, hiring, and upskilling. With no shortage of talent challenges, the opportunities for informative discussion are endless. While a day devoted to dissecting talent-related topics could focus solely on the problems, Talent Forward is all about the solutions.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were approximately 8.6 million STEM jobs in May 2015, with the highest jobs in software development, user support, and systems analysts. Despite the high number of jobs, the lack of skilled workers in the labor force allow these positions to go unfilled. To make matters worse, the existing STEM workforce lacks diversity among women and minorities, not representing the emerging workforce of women and underrepresented groups.

At Talent Forward 2019, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's national workforce conference, we will explore how we define leadership at the intersection of work, education, and tech. How can we create the right environment to support the development of new partnerships and encourage change that is disruptive without being destructive? Is the U.S. workforce ready for the 4th industrial revolution? Experts predict this workforce movement will create game-changing technologies in automation, computer science, advanced robotics, drones, and others that will rapidly change how we live and work. This coming revolution will create STEM jobs that don’t yet exist and new challenges for STEM education.

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) - observed every October - was created to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. The 2018 NCSAM overarching theme, “Our Shared Responsibility,” centers around the idea that we must work together to improve our nation’s cybersecurity and create opportunities for changing behaviors online among consumers, students, and business.

Like many countries around the world, the United States faces a shortage of highly-skilled science and technology workers. In the past decade, employment growth in STEM occupations has markedly outpaced growth in non-STEM occupations, and while there will be an estimated 3.4 million STEM jobs available between 2015 to 2025, only about 1.4 million workers will be qualified to fill them, according to a study by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute. ExxonMobil is taking this challenge head on – but it’s not doing so alone.
STEM Scholars 2018 Wrap Up

A yet to be released report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation STEM Scholars program reveals student knowledge gains, behaviors, and attitudinal changes across the country. The findings provide an analysis of data from more than 4,000 students in 27 schools across Michigan, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Texas. Overall, findings suggest that connecting students’ personal interests and strengths to STEM skills helps students better see themselves in STEM.
